What To Expect During A Jaw Examination
When examining your jaw your doctor or dentist twill listen to your symptoms and perform a thorough examination of your jaw. He or she will listen to the sounds your jaw makes when you open and close it. He or she will also pay attention to the range of motion in your jaw, and look for areas that are painful or uncomfortable during the consultation.
It is also possible that your dentist or doctor will request further investigations following this examination. These might include dental x-rays and CT scans, to provide a clearer picture of what is happening in your teeth and jaw, or more detailed images of the bones in your joint.
Sometimes an MRI might be requested to see if there are any problems in the surrounding soft tissue or disk of your joint.
Common Treatments For TMJ Disorders
In some cases, it is possible for temporomandibular joint pain to go away without treatment. In other cases, your medical practitioner may recommend a combination of medications, surgical procedures or therapies to assist in pain management.
There will be lifestyle changes you can make, such as not over-using your temporomandibular joint muscles by clenching or grinding your jaw, not chewing gum and avoiding chewy or sticky foods.
