Dr Damian Teo

Sleep & TMJ Dentist

Bachelor of Health Science (Dentistry) – Latrobe University
Masters of Dentistry – Latrobe University
Post Graduate Diploma Dental Sleep Medicine – University of Western Australia

Damian is a holistic dentist with a focused interest in snoring, sleep disorders, teeth grinding, TMJ disorders and airway focused orthodontics. In his dentistry, Damian is passionate about looking “beyond the mouth” and treating the body as a whole. He believes dentists play an important role in being able to recognise airway/breathing issues, sleeping problems, and craniofacial pain (such as headaches, neck pain, and TMJ disorders). This led him to undergo extensive postgraduate training with world renowned specialists in the field of sleep medicine and TMJ disorders.

Damian is a member of the Australasian Sleep Association (ASA), and has a Post Graduate Diploma in Dental Sleep Medicine with the University of Western Australia. Damian also consults out of the Melbourne TMJ & Facial Pain Centre, and previously worked in Darwin’s first official TMJ & Sleep Therapy Centre, where he exclusively treated patients for snoring, sleep apnoea, teeth grinding and TMD. Damian understands the value in working with skilled allied health practitioners outside of dentistry. He has presented talks and held seminars to medical and dental professionals to spread the knowledge that dentists can help one’s health and quality of life “beyond the mouth.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What areas does your Melbourne Dental sleep disorder clinic serve?
Our Melbourne Dental sleep disorder clinic serves people from local areas including Footscray, Essendon, Maidstone, Yarraville, Niddrie, Sunshine, Tottenham, and Keilor. However, we are more than happy to see people from other areas too.
Why should I come to your Melbourne Dental sleep clinic over other practices?
Dr Teo, our sleep dentist in Melbourne, works closely with a team of other healthcare practitioners including doctors, specialists, physiotherapists and nutritionists. As such, he takes a holistic view to sleep-related disorders – rather than solely from a dental health perspective. For the patient, it means that rather than treating just the symptoms of snoring, sleep apnoea, and TMJ disorders, he –along with his colleagues- are able to tackle the root cause or source. Ultimately, Melbourne patients are better equipped to take back full control of their sleeping patterns and get their lives back on track.
What experience do you have?
Dr Teo has a Post Graduate Diploma in Dental Sleep Medicine from the University of Western Australia and worked in Darwin’s first official TMJ and Sleep Therapy Centre. There he exclusively treated patients with snoring, teeth grinding, sleep apnoea, and TMJ problems. Dr Teo also consults in the Melbourne TMJ & Facial Pain Centre in Armadale, a specialised TMJ clinic. Dr Teo has also worked and trained with world-renowned specialists in the field of sleep medicine and TMJ disorders. Dr Teo is also a valued member of the Australasian Sleep Association (ASA) and has been exclusively treating patients with sleeping problems and craniofacial pain for the past 7 years.
How do you treat sleep disorder problems?
As a Melbourne TMJ and sleep dentist, our preferred method of treatment utilises a technique known as oral appliance therapy. Using fully-customised mandibular advanced dental splints, we are able to help people to open up their airway and gain back control of their sleep. This technique can treat a wide variety of problems including chronic snoring, obstructive sleep apnoea, TMJ disorders, and bruxism (teeth grinding)
Why do you choose that method over CPAP therapy?
CPAP machines are among the most commonly used treatments for sleep apnoea. However, they can be uncomfortable, inconvenient, noisy, and cumbersome. For this reason, many people struggle to get used to them. CPAP also cannot help those with TMJ pain or teeth grinding issues. With oral appliances such as mouth splints however, Melbourne patients can do away with the fuss as they simply pop the splint into the mouth before sleep. It’s quick, easy and above all, it’s hassle-free!
How can I pay?
We offer a number of ways to pay including cash, EFTPOS and various flexible payment plans. We also accept all insurances and DVA vouchers.
What brands are you associated with?
We work with Australian lab, Airway Centric Orthotics- which services over 50 sleep and TMJ centres across the world. We also work with Somnomed – one of the world leaders in continuous open-air therapy treatment and products for obstructive sleep apnoea.
What is the difference between your oral appliances and many others?
At our Melbourne dental sleep disorder clinic, our state-of-the-art oral appliances are 3D printed using nylon. Therefore, appliances are stronger, less bulky and longer lasting than similar acrylic varieties, so Melbourne patients get used to wearing them quicker for a better overall experience.
